It's about knowing the origins. Of course, there are things I like and dislike at first glance, but when something strikes a chord with me, I first dig deeper. Is it authentic, or an imitation? What are its roots? It's like doing a sensory test within myself.
Indeed, the clothes that Nakata makes and the things he wears all give a sense of his roots.
I think the influence of "BEAMS," where I previously worked, was a big one. It really hammered home to me that superficial fashion isn't enough. In particular, I gained a lot from my experience at "BEAMS Plus Harajuku," when I first joined the company. There, I learned about American traditional style, the importance of knowing the roots, and the joy of digging into them.
How did you go from there to develop your unique sense and originality?
BEAMS was a large company with many unique staff members, so I was always thinking about how to stand out and what my strengths were. I wouldn't have been able to survive there if I was just one of them.
So when I first started working at Beams Plus Harajuku as an opening staff member, I looked for something contrarian (unusual) to differentiate myself from the other staff. And that's when I ended up with accessories.
Not clothes, but accessories like hats and wraps?
That's right. The store had just opened, so no one had paid attention to accessories yet. So I approached her with the hypothesis that if she was conscious of styling by changing her hats, socks, and other accessories every day, people might think, "It might be interesting to have this person do accessories." Because if you're the same as everyone else, you won't stand out.
Nakata's contrarian sense was born out of the competition he felt with those around him.
