"Style Resume" is a series of interviews with adults who, as the name suggests, have style, and is updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Our 15th guest is Setsumasa Kobayashi, representative of <. . . . .RESEARCH>, a man who follows his own path in everything from outdoor activities to custom bikes.
05. He returned to Japan feeling a sense of crisis about shoemaking in Japan.
As the son of a shoe factory owner, I could understand what they were doing in Italy. But it was completely different from what I had seen at my parents' house in Asakusa. The craftsmen all had a general idea of the trends in fashion, and I was surprised at their high level of fashion literacy. In Japanese factories, you couldn't even talk about fashion. I was also surprised at how good the environment was in the workshop where they worked. The atmosphere was completely different to begin with. I wondered what the difference was. This made me realize that I had to become someone on the shoemaker's side who could compete with the fashion world, or at least be useful to them, and so I decided to return to Japan.
