02. Life in New York seemed like everything was sparkling.

I moved to New York in 1969. It was the year of the Woodstock Festival, and as a result, the kids around me were wearing tie-dye T-shirts and had hairstyles like Janis Joplin, even though they were elementary school students. Meanwhile, I wore shorts and had a bowl cut, making me feel like an outsider who had blended in with the hippies (laughs). Everything I saw in New York seemed fresh and sparkling, and I had a lot of fun. I was amazed to see Michael Jackson, who was only one year different from me, singing and dancing on TV as part of the Jackson Five.
