From familiar devices and convenient gadgets, to home appliances that enrich our lives, to new services. This is a serial project that focuses on the latest in tech. In the seventh installment, we will be looking at the "Samsung Galaxy Ring."

Say goodbye to smartwatches.

A lot of new wearable devices have been released recently. However, compared to smartwatches, which have become commonplace, other devices still make little impression.

For example, smart rings. I hardly see anyone wearing one in their daily lives. I think there are a lot of people who don't know what they can do. When that happens, it makes me want to try one out.

Among the several options I considered, the one that caught my eye was the Samsung Galaxy Ring, which I will introduce here. It is a product that has been attracting a lot of attention even before it was released in Japan.

Article image The watch comes in three colors: the one I'm wearing is matte black, the other is matte silver, and the gold color has a slight shine.

As you all know, Samsung is a company that produces a wide range of products, including semiconductors and home appliances. Rather than focusing on one product and continuing to make it, the company's strength is its growth potential, which is to horizontally expand the knowledge gained from its products to other products as the times change, while improving the precision of each product and growing vertically.

The most well-known smartphone in Japan is the Galaxy series. There is probably no one who doesn't know this name, right?

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is, as its name suggests, part of the Galaxy series. Current smart rings can be broadly divided into two types: payment-based and health tracking-based. This ring falls into the latter category.

If you think about it, both of these things can be done with a smartwatch, but this is actually quite good to use. There's no stress whatsoever.

Article image The charging case for wireless charging has a nice clear design. The one I used to match the ring was the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, which has five cameras including a front camera.

This is because I no longer experience any of the dissatisfaction I felt when using a smartwatch to manage my health.

Smartwatches are always a nuisance. Especially when you're sleeping. If you use your arm as a pillow, you'll get irritated. Also, managing the charge is a pain. They're all convenient, but these days, there are just too many things that need to be charged frequently.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring has solved that problem. The charge lasts up to 7 days on the device alone, and it's lightweight. The ring is waterproof to 10ATM and dustproof and waterproof to IP68, and is made of lightweight titanium. It weighs about 2g despite its slightly wide design. It's even lighter than a 5 yen coin!

The width is 7mm and the thickness is 2.6mm, so you can feel it on but it's not noticeable at all, it's like a fashion ring. It's almost the same width as the famous triple ring. I only take it off during bath time, and I can wash the dishes without any problems.

So what can this ring tell you? It has three sensors: an optical biosignal sensor, an acceleration sensor, and a skin temperature sensor, and can tell you about your daily activities. It can track not only your steps and elevation change, but also your sleep, heart rate, and stress level.

I was using an app called "Samsung Health" to manage my health, but the sleep results, which I was most concerned about because they gave me low ratings in all health tracking, were just average, as expected. I was given a sleep pattern based on eight different animals called "Sleep Animals," and the result was a hedgehog. It seems to be quite low, which is quite a shock.

Article image The gesture of bringing two fingers together allows you to take a photo or turn off the alarm. Because of this gesture, we recommend wearing the watch on your index finger.

It's interesting that it makes you want to pay more attention to your health. There are some things that you don't feel like doing to improve even if you track them, so I'm glad to have support in that area. The collected data is analyzed by "Galaxy AI" and advice is given to users, which is impressive.

Oh yes, there are three things to note about the Samsung Galaxy Ring.

First of all, when you buy the ring, be sure to try it out with a sizing kit, since the size will be different from your usual rings. Don't skip this step. If the size is different, the accuracy of the data will decrease, so there's not much point in wearing it.

Next, for people who exercise a lot. Since you can't see the data on the ring alone, I felt that a dedicated smartwatch would be more convenient when exercising, such as during a marathon.

The last one is the compatible OS of the smartphone. It is only compatible with Android, and it is better if you have the "Galaxy" series. It is already a high-performance device that can record snoring.

If you can keep these three points in mind, I can highly recommend it. Other smart rings require you to sign up for additional subscriptions after purchasing the ring, but that's not the case, and it's stress-free. It would be great if you could make payments, but for now I'm very satisfied with just this. There's also the unbalanced combination of a mechanical watch and a smart ring. Doesn't this high degree of freedom seem somehow fun?
