02. The process of shoemaking that I learned naturally through seeing.
The Made in USA catalog (1975), which came out when I was in my second year of junior high school, had a big impact on me because I came across it when I knew nothing about it. I was really surprised to see so much of that kind of American stuff. It felt like it was my initial introduction to the culture. It was all about culture. There were stories about bicycles modified to look like BMXs and mountain bikes. There were also lots of tools in it, and I thought they were completely different from the tools used by our craftsmen. At a time when our craftsmen were wearing belly coats, in America they were working in checked shirts.
