Good Watch, Good Style - The good relationship between watches and clothes. Vol.05 PANERAI Radiomir Quaranta
The year 2025 has begun. I'm sure there are many people out there who are struggling to get their bodies back into work mode after eating too much New Year's food and drinking too much outside.
The reason for this is the New Year's holiday, which was dubbed the "miraculous nine-day holiday" on social media, and there was plenty of time to do various things, such as returning home or traveling, visiting shrines for the first time in the year, shopping, and watching a relay race.
Some of you may have been to a vaudeville theater. From New Year's Day to 10 days later, there are special performances called "first-seat shows," where you can see more performers than you would at a regular theater, with a focus on rakugo, storytelling, kagura, kamikiri, magic, manzai, and more, making you feel like you're getting a bargain.
Speaking of rakugo, there were several storytellers who were once hailed as "Showa masters." These include Katsura Bunraku VIII, Kokontei Shinsho V, and San'yutei Ensho VI, who were instrumental in igniting the rakugo boom that began in the 1950s.
Shortly before that time, in 1935, a wristwatch was made in Italy. It was a prototype of Panerai's masterpiece, the Radiomir, and was requested by the Italian Navy as a diving watch. Interestingly, the movement chosen at that time was made by Rolex Geneva.
The Radiomir is characterized by its "sandwich dial." This dial is made up of a plate coated with luminous paint and a plate with cut-out indexes. At the time, a plate to protect the luminous paint was also sandwiched between the two. This was a design that Panerai invented for divers to improve visibility underwater.
The Radiomir Quaranta, shown in the photo, is a successor to this watch and was born in 2023. It is a model that has been updated from a military-style diver's watch to suit the current era.
Stone Island Ghost vest ¥135,300, knit blouson ¥124,300 (Stone Island Japan)
Paraboot shoes "CHIMEY" ¥96,800 (Paraboot Aoyama store)
The original Radiomir case was 47mm, but this one has been redesigned to 40mm. It has a smart look with an alligator strap, and it goes well with casual outfits. By the way, the "quaranta" in the name of this watch means 40 in Italian.
It is equipped with the automatic caliber P.900, which boasts a 72-hour power reserve, so you can leave it off over the weekend and not have to wind it up on Monday.
If you think about it, this year marks the 100th year of the Showa era. Although we can't turn back time, it would be nice to look at this clock and reminisce about the past.
