Whether it's fashion, music, or sports, there is a style that only each person can express in any genre. "Style is Everything." That's right, someone once said that style is everything. "Style Resume" is a series of interviews with adults who, as the name suggests, have style. Updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the 12th installment traces the life of Shimazu Yoshiyuki, who works as a stylist and creative director.
06. About Masahiro Arita and "Our House."
I first learned about Arita through the pages of Men's Club. Arita graduated from Kyushu Gakuin High School, and after graduating he served as the coordinator of an organization called the "Ivy Spirit Fan Club" that was formed at Kyushu Gakuin. Men's Club devoted four or five pages to Arita. I was in contact with some of the Kyushu Gakuin students, so I had a one-sided view of Arita as "amazing." He was the quintessential Ivy League youth, wearing a sky blue and yellow cardigan sweater, white flared pants, and carrying a book under his arm.
Arita started working at Our House, a store run by Higashihama, and since my house was nearby, I started frequenting the store. I think they had Ocean Pacific, Eddie Bauer, Keds, and Converse. The background music was the Eagles and the Doobie Brothers. At the time, I was also dressed in a West Coast style, wearing rugby shirts and Levi's 517s or 646s. Higashihama was very kind to me, and would tell me, "I'm going to play pachinko, so please watch the store."
When I heard that Arita was going to America, I agreed to go with him, but he told me, "Make sure you tell your parents and your school." As I said before, I had pretty much dropped out of school at the time, but I kept quiet about it, and only recently did I finally confess to Arita about it (laughs).
