"Style Resume" is a series of interviews with adults who literally have style. Updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the commemorative 10th installment features Matsutoya Masataka, who is known for his wide-ranging activities as a musician, but is also known as a lover of cars, watches, and fashion. Let's learn about Matsutoya Masataka's style from his words and photos in a total of 13 installments in June.

08. Invited to record Takuro Yoshida's "Let's Get Married."

The performance with Suga Setsukazu was a contest held at the now defunct Tokyu Main Store. Suga brought along Hayashi Tatsuo, saying he was a "great drummer," and I played as backing drummers. The judge at that time was Kato Kazuhiko. Shortly after the contest, Kato contacted me and Hayashi and I decided to go to a studio to record music for a commercial. It seems Hayashi already had experience, but this was my first time in a recording studio. I played the piano and received 12,000 or 13,000 yen, and I thought, "Wow, I can get money for playing the piano?"

A few weeks later, I got another call from Kato. This time it was at Teichiku Studio, and when I got there, Takuro Yoshida was there. So we recorded the single "Let's Get Married." It was released in January 1972, so that must have been 1971... I remember there was quite a gap between the recording and the release. Anyway, this was my first recording for a record.

The period from my third year of high school to my first year of university, when this happened, was a very intense year for me. Even so, if I hadn't met Suga and taken on the piano role, I wouldn't be where I am now. I couldn't be a salaryman swaying on crowded trains, and I wanted a job with lots of holidays, so I started thinking about being a school teacher in my mid-teens. I also felt that the classical music world wasn't for me.

Takuro Yoshida's "Let's Get Married" was released in January 1972. It was the song that pushed folk music, which had previously been considered underground, into the mainstream, and is also described as "the turning point for Japanese folk and rock" and "the origin of J-POP."
