07. Before I knew it, I had become an illustrator.
After drawing the cover for "POPEYE," I was then asked to draw the cover for a magazine called "Mr. Bike." After that, Mitsubishi asked me to draw the cover for their catalogue for a car called the "Mirage," and work started pouring in one after the other. The request for the "Mirage" illustration was to draw water spraying a car with a hose and causing it to splash. Computers didn't exist yet, so I hand-drawn every single drop of water in gouache to create a realistic look. The number of requests increased dramatically after this "Mirage" job, and I also started drawing pictures of motorcycles for the columns in the inside pages of "POPEYE." Then I started getting a lot of work from Dentsu and Hakuhodo, and before I knew it, I had become an illustrator.
