04. He became obsessed with motorbikes and would play McQueen every night.
Aichi Prefectural Asahigaoka High School had an art department, but only the best students could attend. I hated studying, so I chose a private high school that had an art department at its affiliated university for the high school entrance exam. I decided on this very naive idea that if I got in, I could go on to study art at university, but when I got there, it turned out to be a terrible school full of delinquents (laughs).
I went to high school by bus, but I was so impressed by McQueen's jump on a Triumph motorcycle in "The Great Escape" (1963) that I really wanted to ride the same TR6 Trophy as in the movie, so I got my motorcycle license at the age of 16. However, I didn't know how to get it and didn't have the money, so I bought a KAWASAKI W1, which was similar in shape, and used that to go to school. I rode the motorcycle part of the way, and then walked to school.
In the movie, the TR6 is fitted with motocross tires, so I did the same and fitted them to my W1. I used to play McQueen every night on the grass in front of Nagoya University. On the grass, it slides just like in the movie. It felt good, so I played it a lot. Thinking about it now, I'm glad I didn't get caught (laughs). Influenced by McQueen, I fell in love with motorcycles, and I spent my high school days riding motocross bikes on the riverbank and going on tours, but I didn't do much else.
