01. When I was a child, helping with farm work was a daily routine.
I'm from Nagano. I was born in 1957 in Sakaki, a small town just one street away from Ueda. I'm the eldest son of three siblings, a brother and a sister. My father was an employee, but my grandfather ran a rice field, a farm, and a shop. The shop was a general store that sold groceries as well as everyday items. I helped out with a lot of things, but it wasn't hard. In addition to growing crops for self-sufficiency, we also had a large apple orchard, but one day my grandfather suddenly cut down all the apple trees and replaced them with grapes, becoming the first in town to do so. I helped with the harvest and shipping of these before going to school. When grapes flower, they apply a medicine called gibberellin. The grapes are a type of grape called Delaware, and the medicine is used to make seedless grapes. Food coloring is used to mark the grapes that have been applied, but when you do that, the food coloring gets on your hands. So my hands were bright red during this time of year.
My father never helped with farm work, but he loved animals. It wasn't just that he had goats or dogs, he had monkeys and all kinds of birds, not just 20 or 30 birds. I was in charge of feeding the animals. When I was in high school, I would go into the mountains every day from the end of August to around the 20th of October, doing things like that. I would pick matsutake mushrooms. I would pack them up and go to Kamiyamada Onsen in Chikuma City to sell them.

Shinichi Nakasone (Labrador Retriever Representative)
Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1957. Worked at the famous American casual store "Backdrop" from 1977 until leaving the company in 1986. After that, inspired by his desire to live a lifestyle with a dog, he started an import shop called "Labrador Retriever", named after his dog. He currently works outside of conventional boundaries, directing and advising various brands and companies.
