Whether it's fashion, music, or sports, there is a style that only each person can express in any genre. "Style is Everything." That's right, someone once said that style is everything. "Style Resume" is a series of interviews with adults who, as the name suggests, have style. Updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the 12th installment traces the life of Shimazu Yoshiyuki, who works as a stylist and creative director.

07. Things I saw in Harajuku and bought in America.

Before going to America, Arita-san took me to Harajuku. We went to Tarumi Gen's Hollywood Ranch Market in Sendagaya and Gokurakudori in Harajuku - at the time it was either a store for Danish earth shoes Kalso or it was combined with Gokurakudori - and Tarumi-san told me that Polk Street in San Francisco was a mecca for hippies, so I should go there. I also remember the boutique HELP in Omotesando. It was an interesting store with a Comme des Garçons section. Harajuku had a lovely "sunny town" feel to it. I decided to come back there again.

My first visit to America was to San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and finally Hawaii. It was a time when the exchange rate was 360 yen to the dollar, but local prices were low, so I remember buying things like Adidas "Tabacco," a tie-dyed Fruit of the Loom T-shirt, and Levi's 517s. I also bought a secondhand chambray western shirt with western details and a slightly marine-inspired design with navy and white ribbing. I've loved secondhand clothes with a high level of design ever since.

Experiencing hippie America at its height made me think, "In fashion, you're not bound by rules, you should just do what you like," but at the same time, when I looked out over the city of LA from the hills near Universal Studios, I was made painfully aware of just how small I am.

  • This tie-dyed thermal jacket with a Fruit of the Loom body was purchased in LA at the time. Shimazu likes the dark, psychedelic feel of it.

  • This shirt is a mix of chambray, marine and western elements that I also bought at the time. It has a great design and I wore it often during my time in Paris.
