Whether it's fashion, music, or sports, there is a style that only each person can show in any genre. "Style is Everything." That's right, someone said that style is everything. "Style Resume" is a series of interviews with adults who literally have style. Updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the third installment traces the life story of Takeo Kikuchi, the founder and designer of Japan's leading men's brand, Takeo Kikuchi.

1. Memories of the war and life at that time.

I was born on May 25, 1939, right before the war. During the war, my father said, "It's okay," so we didn't evacuate and lived in Fujimi-cho, Chiyoda Ward, where I was born. Fortunately, incendiary bombs were never dropped on our house, but I remember seeing dead bodies lying on the roads around our house just after the war ended.

About a year before the end of the war, I suffered from a disease in which pus accumulated in my pleura, and the head of the surgery department at Nippon Medical School operated on me at home. I remember it was extremely painful, without anesthesia. I think it was probably provided by the military, but penicillin had arrived just after the war, and I used it to treat the infection. I was the second Japanese person to use it.

At the time, my parents' house was 1520m² in size, and there was a Western-style building on either side of a typical Japanese one-story house that my father used for work. Although we lived in the one-story house for everyday purposes, such as eating and sleeping, we would sneak into the Western-style building to play.

My father's clothes were completely Western, or maybe Russian, and he had a strange sense of fashion. After the war, I was forced to wear children's clothing surplus from the US military. I wore jeans, a reversible synthetic jacket with a zipper in the front, and leather shoes. Like other families, there were times when food was scarce, but our family's period was quite short, and we were able to recover quickly. I think that was also because my father had connections with politicians.

  • He was the sixth of 12 siblings, but his two oldest children died shortly after birth. His father ran a business, so he grew up in a wealthy environment.
