Sometimes people bet the majority of their lives on big bets, and if they lose, they lose everything. It is said that there is a personal philosophy behind gambling. We have exposed the thoughts of people who are fascinated by the magic of gambling, from their first experience to their sure-fire winning methods and how they spend their winnings.

Chapter 08 | NO GAMBLING, NO LIFE. part.2

PELO
(WACKO MARIA)

-What is your favorite gambling?

Horse racing.

-How often?

Every Saturday and Sunday when the JRA races are held. If there are any major races, local races are also held.

-What was your first time gambling?

JRA. It was around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, and there were no spectators. I think I started making proper predictions and buying tickets from the 2020 Takarazuka Kinen.

-What made you get into it?

This is the influence of my colleagues at Wacko Maria . Sometimes the horses run according to the data, sometimes they don't run because they're in the mood, and of course there are elements of luck, such as a bad start or a fall, but when I started to look into the pedigrees and the characteristics of each racecourse, I'm hooked. There are horses with strong personalities and the racehorses are cute. Even when my favorite horse retires, its children and siblings come along, so I can't stop watching.

-What is the largest amount you won and lost in a day?

The maximum winning amount is 60,000 yen, and the maximum losing amount is 10,000 yen. Since there is a limit to the amount of money you can spend on one race, you will not win big, but you will also not lose big. If you get too excited trying to get it back, it's over.

-What will you do with your winnings?

The amount of money bet on the next race. I'm happy if I break even overall, so I use the money I win from one race to bet on the next one.

-What's your favorite drink?

With the way I bet, it's too early to start drinking whether I win or lose.

-What is your own method of winning or prayer?

I make predictions based on the horse's pedigree, the racecourse, the track, and the jockey's data, but in the end it's all about intuition, but the most important thing is to stick to your original intention. It's not good to think too much, and there's not much point in being swayed by predictions on YouTube or the internet. The key is whether you can believe in yourself when you make your first prediction.

-What kind of gambling are you interested in (or want to try) right now?

I recently read the manga "Monkey Turn" and I'm a little interested in motorboat racing, but for now I'm just doing my best to predict the results of the horse races every week. I'd like to experience the atmosphere of a motorboat racing venue, as it seems to have a different customer base from horse racing.

-What is the appeal of gambling?

For me, horse racing is more like entertainment and playing a game than "buying a dream." I got hooked on it as a way to kill time during the COVID-19 pandemic, but I only bet small amounts and enjoy checking the results with my own predictions. When I watch a horse from its debut race, I get emotional and buy tickets to support it, so I'm still a long way from being a true gambler. Also, there are surprisingly many people in the apparel industry who are involved in horse racing, and I've sometimes become friends with them by talking about horse racing. Just like alcohol and cigarettes, gambling is also a communication tool.
